Yes. Patients can stop hospice care without their doctor’s consent. This is called “cancellation” hospice. Sometimes patients decide to stop hospitalization because they want to be treated again. If they cancel hospice care, they can choose surgery or continue treatment. Some patients cancel one hospital stay to transfer to another. In any case, hospice care is always the patient’s choice. When a patient opts out of hospice services, it also means canceling all Medicare hospice benefits: home care equipment and supplies, comprehensive or therapeutic services, home visits, etc.
